On Bing, Microsoft's new search engine (which I really like!), Amway Wiki is on page 1, and Amway Watch and The Truth About Amway on page 2.

Most times when searching for "Amway" with google US, The Truth About Amway is now appearing either towards the bottom of page 1 or the top of page 2!
Amway Wiki has made it's way to page 3 on google and Amway Watch is on page 4.

hmm ... and then today, for no apparent reason, TTAA drops to page 4 on google, just above Amway Watch, with Amway Wiki on page 3. Strange.

I attended an ILD Global conference this weekend in Schaumburg, IL, and was absolutely tickled when an Amway Global corp. representative (Who was AWESOME, despite my embarrassing loss of her name at this time) was using a slide-show to illustrate some of the branding strategies they have been using as of late.
Why was I tickled?
One slide, a screen shot of a Google search for "Amway Global", clearly listing "The Truth About Amway" at position 4.
I couldn't say when it was taken, but I am sure more than a couple of more people have at least seen the site's name; there was a good 1200 - 1500 in attendance.
Will any of it help? I dunno', but IBOFB could probably track trends over the next few weeks and tell...

The corp has done a reasonably good job on "Amway Global" searches, but there's a fundamental flaw in the strategy -
The red line is US google searches for "Amway Global" the past month, the blue line is US google searches for "Amway".

What has Alticor/ Amway Global done right regarding Google searches for "Amway Global". How does a company affect the ranking of search results, if that's what you're implying? Do they pay Google? Do they have staff who do lots of searches and select the official Amway Global web-site? Sorry if these are dumb questions. If I were to live my life over again I would be a computer specialist or a roots rock-and-roll star. But alas, I don't know much about computer technology and I don't have any female fans waiting in long lines to meet me after a gig.

A few things, one is in having Amway Global sites setup in a search friendly manner. Another is ensuring there's few new Amway Global critics!

Set up a variety of sites that use the AG name, and have them link to eachother. Get other sites (eg newspapers) mentioning AG and linking to the AG sites

The last one I used to think was a dumb question, but I've now seen it (or a variation) asked so many times that clearly it's not! How many visitors you get has no direct influence on your ranking. The only way it has an influence is that the more visitors you have, the more likely it is one of them will have a website and link to you.

As a biased foreigner ... absolutely!! However, note that the graph I chose was only for google searches originating in the US. Internationally it's even more pronounced, as you'd expect,

It's mentions of the terms in news reports.

If you check the original page for the graph it has a link off to the news report.

Okay, lets see if I've got it. It doesn't matter how many people type "Amway" in the Google search box, then they click on the www.amway.com link, as opposed to amwaysucks.com, or Larson's site, etc. The official Amway site won't move up the list. (Actually I did this just now, and www.amway.com is on top. Then above it again is Amway Global as the "sponsored link". This is what I meant when I asked if Amway is paying Google.) You're saying that it all has to do with links to other sites.
Regarding the search I just did on "Amway", your site www.thetruthaboutamway.com is on page 3 of the list. If we wish for your site to move up to page one or two, we have to create more web-sites and provide links to your site. It doesn't matter if we decide to visit your site from the search list page. Therefore, I should start a blog and link to your site, and Amway's sites, and Bridgett's site, etc.?

I think the Google (and other search engine) rankings are highly affected when a site is linked to a specific word on another highly ranked site.
And blogs are, in general, ranked lower than a "real" website.
In other words:
a blog with low traffic, and a link to this site in it's blog roll (link to the side, rather than in a blog post), will have very little impact,
while a "hot" website, that has high traffic, with, say a news story, in which a word, like "Amway" is linked to this site, will have a very high impact.
However, if there isn't much being linked on the "real" websites, then that's where blogs start to matter, since there's nothing else outranking them.
And blogs are, in general, ranked lower than a "real" website.

Yup, you've both pretty much got it. The "sponsored links", generally on the right side, are paid for.
While that's the basic idea, there are some tweaks. Both Google and Bing seem to make active choices to weight the "official" corporate sites higher, and also wikipedia. Content of course also matters, and that's the website owners job. How search engines interpret it differs though. Bing for example has decided (correctly!) that Amway Wiki would be a good site for people searching for Amway, and have put it on page one. Amway Watch and TTAA are on page two.
How much traffic you get doesn't matter, but I'm guessing that if you have google toolbar installed, and allowed it to communicate back to google, if a site is getting massive amounts of traffic but not ranking highly, google is probably going to look at their algorithms to try and improve them.
