Amway/Alticor 2009 sales data

General Amway talk that doesn't fit anywhere else

Access Business Group did $142 million in 2007 but that apparently does not include the Hotels. Plus you have the acquisitions like Gurwitch, which did $125 million in 2006, Fulton's licencing agreements, etc etc over the last few years, so Amway having sales of $7.8 billion out of a total Alticor of $8.2billion in 2008 does make some sense, and $7.8 billion to $8.3 billion growth in Amway sales 2008 to 2009 seems quite plausible. $9.3 billion total still seems pretty high, but I guess not out of the question!

Must be a funny conversation for Cindy to be reading

Just saw a Herbalife sales report noting the effect of USD rates. They increased sales 5.1% but report a 1.5% decline in USD sales -

For the twelve months ended December 31, 2009, the company reported net sales of $2.3 billion, a 1.5 percent decline primarily due to the negative impact of foreign currency fluctuations whereas in local currency net sales for fiscal 2009 increased 5.1 percent compared to fiscal 2008.

Didn't currency rates, declines, or something happen before in the Amway Business, regarding Japan? Like maybe a decade ago?

I seem to recall reading something somewhere, where the number of SKUs were way up, but due to some currency rate exchange, they actually lost like $700 million.

This is all high economics to me. I'll just stick with the fact that our little Amway business here in BridgettLand, USA showed an increase in profit in 2009 over 2008. :)

Yes, this happened during the Asian financial crisis in 1997 and 1998.

From 1997 Amway sales announcement:
"Our sales growth has been phenomenal this decade. Without the negative impact of $430 million from foreign currency translation against a stronger U.S. dollar this fiscal year, we would have posted sales growth in line with our strong performance each year during the 1990s."

From 1998 Amway sales announcement:
"Fiscal 1998 was a challenging year," stated Amway Chairman Steve Van Andel. "Nearly half of our business is in Asian markets where economic upheaval resulted in weak consumer demand. Our revenues were further reduced when translated from weak Asian currencies back into strong U.S. dollars."
About 85 percent of the decline Amway experienced during the past fiscal year can be attributed to factors associated with the strong U.S. dollar, especially as this coincided with the weak Asian economy. In fact, the majority of Amway’s decline in sales can be attributed to just five affiliate markets – Japan, Korea, China, Malaysia and Thailand – which together declined by almost $1 billion in estimated retail sales.

In 1998, the sales were $5.7 billion (decline of $1.3 billion from $7 billion reported in 1997). That means that almost $1.1 billion (85% x 1.3) drop was caused by the negative currency translation at that time. So the actual drop wasn't so big as it seems.

Amway to build new Bt992 mn Thai headquarter
By KWANCHAI RUNGFAPAISARN
THE NATION
Published on January 27, 2010

US-based direct-sales marketing giant Amway yesterday announced it would build a new Thai headquarters at a cost of US$30-million (Bt992 million). The move marks a strong, long-term commitment to maintaining its local momentum. Located on Ramkhamhaeng Road, the new office complex, on 10 rai, will feature space of more than 35,000 square metres. The new headquarters will also provide ultimate convenience to 1 million Amway business-owners and members.

"We're working on designing the details of the new Amway complex, which will include an Amway shop, office building and an eight-floor parking lot," said Preecha Prakobkit, managing director of Amway (Thailand). "It will also feature a conference room that can accommodate 1,000 people, while the office building itself can accommodate up to 500 staff." He said the company foresaw continued expansion of its business in Thailand, confirmed by 15-per-cent sales growth to a record Bt13.3 billion last year. "The new local headquarters will support our expansion plan and our aspiration to achieve annual sales of Bt20 billion in 2012," Preecha said. He said construction of the new headquarters would start in this year's fourth quarter and be completed by 2012. The new complex will cater to Amway's business growth in Thailand for the next 30 years. "The design of the new Amway headquarters will embrace the green concept, to enable energy savings and create a cosy, relaxing ambience along with a sense of freedom, modernity and security," said Preecha. He said Amway enjoyed a 27-per-cent share of Thailand's Bt45-billion direct-sales market. The overall market is expected to grow 10 per cent this year. "We see a strong potential for the direct-sales industry in Thailand, which now represents less than 1 per cent of the total Bt3-trillion retail industry," Preecha said.

Kittawat Ritteerawee, general manager for business relations and marketing, said: "In 2009, Amway posted record sales of Bt13.3 billion, representing 15-per-cent growth, 60 per cent of which came from our health and beauty products. "This year, we'll continue our emphasis on quality offerings in health and beauty, with a comprehensive product portfolio that covers different needs for all segments." Kittawat said more Amway Shops would be opened this year, to increase consumers' accessibility to Amway brands.

A Bt750-million budget for marketing, sales promotion, advertising, public relations and other relevant activities will be aimed at retaining present customers while reaching out to new ones, he added.

Breaking news!!! The 2009 sales figures are in.

This hot news tip is from The Daily Herald- "Snohomish County's online news source" in Everett, Washington:

Desire to own business lures many to network marketing

By Juergen Kneifel and Pat Sisneros
Special to the Herald

.... From humble beginnings in 1959, Amway has grown to nearly $11 billion in retail sales in 2009.

I guess that settles it. Amway is up $3.5 Billion last year and the Grand Rapids Press got scooped by a small town newspaper 1500 miles away.

Well, using the old method of "estimated retail sales" that would be about $8.3billion at IBO price.

I've been think about the sales, I could see North America going up as much as a couple hundred million after the TEAM dust had cleared, and pushed by the recruiting growth in 2008.

But 11 billion, at IBO price? Only if Russia and China had explosive growth.
