"Religious Freedom" crosses the line??

.

Because THEIR Holy Book tells them to die defending their religion.

Oh Deb,
Didn't you get the press release that Islam is a peaceful religion? Peaceful religions don't defend. Angel

That may have to do with different religious views about the nature of each "holy book", but there's certainly been plenty of death threats against muslims over the islamic cultural center in NY, not to mention the death threats and actual murders of doctors at abortion clinics, again religiously justified. And gallery officials certainly received death threats over Piss Christ

Also interesting to look at historical cycles. In the 15th century the Ottoman empire was a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, tolerant technologically evolved society. Christians were running the Spanish Inquisition.

Many isolated incidents, just like the environmental activist Discovery TV terrorist... or the Save the Earth Uni-Bomber.

But on the broader scale, it is interesting to see the record of institutionalized atheism.

Depending on the historian, atheist-socialist nations have murdered between 20-100 million people THIS CENTURY.

So I guess everyone has some skin in this game.

One could certainly interpret that as "killing in the name of Jesus", no?

I don't see it that way at all Confusedcratch: It's not like those scriptural passages say "Go kill (fill-in-the-blank)" Ever heard the phrase "Foxhole Christian"? Although the Bible reference is apparently against US MIlitary command's rules - trust me, those words would be comforting to a Christian soldier who knows that at any second, he could be meeting his Maker...

I wonder how many soldiers were ever aware of that in the first place? More likely, the owner of the company just wants the protection of a Higher Power watching over our soldiers - who incidentally, are looking for terrorists - not "Muslims"

Well, it has to also be considered in the context of the fact that your Commander-in-chief declared the war against the terrorists to be a christian holy war against muslims.

Granted I don't think Bush realised the implications of the word "crusade" (though I'd be surprised if his speechwriter didn't), but these things have to be considered in terms of the listener as well. Europe shuddered.

I do wonder what the thousands of Muslims fighting, and dying, for the United States think of the biblical verses in their guns, in such a context. Incidentally they were removed after the NZ armed forces complained about them.

Oh - once in a while a lunatic Christian goes off in left field - I'm thinking the David Koresh/Jim Jones types - but they seem to end up killing themselves and their followers Confusedcratch: :dontknow: I guess there's not enough media outrage, until a bunch of innocent folks get killed. Which brings me full circle back to why we don't want to piss off a bunch of well-organized, ANGRY-already Muslim Zealots...... because they WILL pick a target and they don't care how many innocent people (Including Muslims, let's not forget) get killed. Heck - the more, the merrier

Merely exisiting is enough to piss them off.

I still can't find one ounce of acknowledgement - or debate - over the fact we are all reacting primarily on the expectation there will be violence, possibly innocent deaths, over this ill-advised, but violence-free expression of opinion.

Look, the guy is nutty...he opposes blatantly offensive acts influenced by a religious belief by committing, from a religious pulpit, a blatantly offensive act.

Granted, "offensive" means "violence" in one case, vs. "tasteless demonstration" to another, but the idiocy is clear: it's not even debatable that the BBQ is not the optimal way to express oneself, and most of us got that.

But, what kind of world are we promoting that dilutes non-violent opinion on the threat of violent response?

Don't go out of your way to offend someone is good sense.

But the fact innocent people might die for doing so seems like a far bigger issue to be addressed - and corrected - than the social blunder precipitating it.

That's really scaring me...

Woody Allen used to quip, "I wouldn't want to be a part of any club that would have me as a member."

This is kinda' where I am coming from...stay with me.

We are defending, in the interest of social calm, a group inclined to use violence if we do not.

Or, from the other angle, condemning a demonstration born of the opposition of violence, on the basis it might precipitate it.

I do not want to be part of either club.
