I'll have to watch those later (it's close to lunchtime and I'm sure he's going to ruin my appetite) - but doesn't Dex sort of look like John Belushi?????

Re: Amway - 60 Minutes video from 1982
OK - here's some trivia:

Mike Wallace, who conducted that interview, worked for WOOD Radio in Grand Rapids (I think he was a reporter??) at the same time my grandfather worked there as the Advertising Manager. I also suspect this was before Grampa met Rich and Jay - or he'd have signed Mike up as a Nutrilite Distributor....LOL!!

Anyway - he told Mike that he should "look into that new-fangled Television thing" - that he might have career potential there :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Wow,

First time I have seen this. Mike Wallace did a great job with this interview. Really asked some of the tough questions for both Dexter and Birdie.

I was also impressed at how upfront they both were, especially back in 1982. Loved the answers to brainwashing, cults, making money on functions ($15 bucks!!), his heroes and why. Pretty good overall interview.

Re: Amway - 60 Minutes video from 1982
Dexter and Birdie never flinched or tried to take back anything that Wallace quoted from their speeches. They know who they are and are unapologetic about it. I wish that I had been more sure of things. I think I would have made less mistakes in life if I chose to see certain life questions in black and white, rather than thinking that there are exceptions. I also admire Dexter and Birdie's commitment to one career. Now his sons are running the business, and doing a great job, I believe.

Re: Amway - 60 Minutes video from 1982
I also found it interesting that Dexter was up front about his evangelising and went out of his way to say that was in his organisation and wasn't an Amway wide thing. 27yrs later some critics are still claiming it as an Amway wide thing, based on experiences within the Yager organisation. Also interesting to here the context of the "Dexter is like Jesus" claim that critics have attacked Birdie for. In context it was quite OK.

Personally I think they acquitted themselves quite well, though Dexter had a tendency to ramble on a bit and not really answer the question sometimes. I can see how if you were a positive thinking person then they would have made Amway look attractive. If you were looking for satan under every stone then you could have interpreted things that way too.

I call Dex the Teflon IBO because anything that was thrown at him never stuck. That would include a LOT of Rules and Regs from the Corp, I was told.
